A small to medium-sized deciduous tree valued for its compact, rounded form and multi-season interest. Its bright green, ovate leaves provide summer shade, turning shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. Inconspicuous catkins appear in spring, followed by small nutlets that attract wildlife. Its naturally dense growth and smooth, gray, fluted bark give year-round ornamental appeal.
Valued for adaptability, fall color, and wildlife support, it grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils. Tolerant of urban conditions and shade, minimal pruning is needed except to maintain shape or remove dead wood.
