A deciduous native tree or large shrub with medium green foliage that provides seasonal interest. In late spring, it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators. In summer, it produces small, dark purple to black berries that are typically ready for picking in late July to early August and can be used for jams, jellies, and preserves. In fall, the foliage turns yellow to red, adding vibrant autumn colour.

This tree is valued for its adaptability, cold hardiness, and wildlife benefits. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is low maintenance and suitable for naturalized areas, hedgerows, or home landscapes.
