A large, long-lived deciduous shade tree valued for its brilliant fall colour and strong landscape presence. The foliage is medium to dark green through summer and turns vibrant yellow, orange, and red in autumn. This is also the primary species used for maple syrup production.

It has a dense, rounded canopy and is commonly used as a specimen shade tree in larger landscapes, parks, and rural plantings. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soils. Very cold hardy and well suited to Ontario climates.
